At St. Bede, we are guided by a philosophy of enabling students’ “hidden selves to grow strong” (Eph. 3:16). Along with character and discipline, we ask students to challenge themselves in many different areas of growth – academically, spiritually, athletically, and musically. We believe that giving students the opportunity to explore their potential in these different arenas helps build the confidence and intellectual agility needed to become active, responsible contributors to society.
There’s no greater joy than hearing young voices lifted up in song! Open to students in Grades 4–8, our student choir is an integral part of St. Bede campus life. Led by Dr. Lisa Thelen, they sing monthly at St. Bede’s 9:00 am Sunday mass, Christmas Eve mass, and throughout the school year at on-campus programs. Dr. Thelen also offers four officer positions for older students, to support growth in leadership.
Sponsored by the La Cañada A.M. Kiwanis, the Builders Club is an organization of students dedicated to serving their parish, school, and community through projects that build leadership and responsibility. The club is open to 7th and 8th Grader students, and meets every two weeks at the Parish Center during lunch. A truly impactful group, the Builders Club was awarded the Les Tupper Community Service Award, La Canada’s highest service honor, in May of 2005.
Comprised of 7th and 8th Grade peer-elected students, the Student Council is committed to promoting good citizenship, encouraging a high standard of scholarship, arousing a spirit of pride within our school, demonstrating the practical applications of democracy, and contributing to the general welfare of the school and community. Active leaders of the school, the Student Council conducts fundraisers, leads school assemblies, and sponsors fun on-campus events such as the school carnival. All Student Council members are encouraged to attend the TACSC Leadership Conference during the summer following their election to office.
Students interested in journalism and writing can join the staff of The Venerable Voice. This student-led, seasonal newspaper includes reports on school events, local restaurant reviews, editorials, short stories, interviews with faculty, crossword puzzles, a doodle contest, and more. Open to all 8th Grade students, the paper’s staff is overseen by Miss Francine Zube, our second-grade teacher. Planning and editing meetings are held every Friday morning.
St. Bede is the home of the Chargers! We believe athletics are not only good for physical health, but also help promote self-esteem, cooperation, responsibility, sportsmanship, and ethics. Beginning in the 5th Grade, students are eligible to join any number of school-sponsored teams including volleyball, flag football, basketball, track, and softball. Our Chargers compete against teams from other Catholic schools in the Los Angeles area.
